A young man was walking on a beach following a storm. There were thousands of starfish carried up by the storm surge and stranded on the sand. “Too bad,” he thought, glancing at the sun emerging from the clouds.
In the distance he saw an old man scaling something out over the waves. As he drew abreast he discerned that the old codger was picking up starfish and throwing them into the sea.
“Excuse me, sir, but can I ask what you’re doing?” he queried.
The old man paused and answered, “These starfish were stranded by the storm. I’m throwin’ ‘em back into the sea before the sun bakes ‘em.”
“But sir,” the young man chided, “there are thousands. Do you think the few you’ll be able to throw back will make a difference?”
The old man scaled another one out over the waves. “It made a difference to that one,” he grinned.
